Two-up worked example: a reading packet
For an 18-page reading packet, two-up produces 9 A4 output pages. Keeping the cover separate produces 10: one cover plus 9 pages for the remaining 17 source pages. These counts describe single-sided output; duplex printing is a separate printer setting.
Settings to compare
Start with landscape for portrait source pages. Read the smallest footnote at the intended print size. If it is too small, use the original PDF at one page per sheet. Trimming can recover blank borders, but cannot make dense text suitable for every reader.
Before printing
This is sequential two-up, not booklet imposition. Pages 1 and 2 share the first sheet; they are not rearranged for folding or binding.
Download the original nine-slide sample to compare with your exported version. It is an original demonstration document, not a customer file.
When to use 2 PDF pages per sheet
Two-up is the safest compact layout when you still need comfortable reading space. It suits articles, workbook pages, handouts, meeting notes, and slide decks with smaller text. Each output sheet carries two original pages, reducing paper while leaving room to scan and annotate.
Creating the two-up file first also avoids differences between printer dialogs. You can preview the arrangement once, download it, and print the same compact PDF later from any standard viewer.
A readable side-by-side arrangement
Landscape output usually gives two source pages enough width for headings, diagrams, tables, and notes. Portrait is available when the source shape or planned paper handling makes a vertical sheet more useful.
Check the preview at a realistic size before printing. If the text feels too small, return to one page per sheet in your viewer; if the result leaves too much space, the four-up layout may be a better fit.
Make wide borders useful again
Auto-Trim Margins reduces unnecessary borders before the pages are placed side by side. It is especially useful for exported slides, scanned notes, and documents with generous page padding.
Documents with handwritten marks or footnotes near an edge deserve a careful preview. You can turn trimming off without choosing the file again, and the original PDF remains unchanged.
Private browser-based PDF processing
The core conversion runs locally in your browser. Your source document is not uploaded to PDF-Compact for processing, and the temporary Blob URL used by the preview remains on your device. This makes the workflow suitable for school material, personal notes, internal drafts, and other documents you would rather not send to a conversion server.
The page loads the PDF processing libraries only after you choose a file. Processing time depends on the page count, scanned images, and the available memory on your device. Keep the tab open while the preview is being built, then download the result if you want to keep it after closing the page.
Before you process a difficult PDF
Scans and wide margins
If edge notes disappear, turn Auto-trim margins off and compare the rebuilt preview. Scanned text stays an image: this tool does not perform OCR or sharpen blurry scans.
Large or rotated documents
If processing fails, turn trimming off to skip margin detection. For memory errors, split the document in a trusted local viewer and process smaller sections. Rotate incorrectly oriented source pages in your viewer first.
Print the exported layout once
The output is A4. In your PDF viewer, choose one page per sheet and select A4 paper; use Fit if your printer cannot print to the edge. Applying another multiple-pages setting will shrink the layout again. Duplex is controlled by your printer, so test one sheet to choose the appropriate flip edge.
If an embedded preview does not display on your device but Download PDF is enabled, download the file and open it in your usual PDF viewer. Keep your original file: this tool does not store a backup, reduce image quality, or guarantee a smaller file size.
